With a season-ending ACL tear ending potential starter Derrius Guice’s rookie season before it began, the Redskins have been looking at the free agent running back pool.
Washington visits Arizona at University of Phoenix Stadium on Sept. 9 to open the year.
After spending time with the New Orleans Saints to begin last year, Peterson was traded to the Cardinals on Oct. 10 for a sixth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
With an injury to David Johnson hitting Arizona in Week 1 of last year, Peterson looked like he could still carry the load right away in 2017.
In his first game in Cardinal red, Peterson did just that, exploding for 134 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries.
He would only have one other game over the century mark, however, as he failed to record more than 80 yards in four out of his six appearances with the team. The 33-year-old finished his stint with Arizona rushing for 448 yards on 129 attempts. He scored twice.
Peterson was placed on injured reserve for the remainder of the season after suffering a neck injury against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 12.
He was later waived by Arizona.
Orleans Darkwa and Jamaal Charles have also been linked to the Redskins as they try to shore up their backfield.
