By the numbers: The Arizona Diamondbacks’ 2018 season

Despite missing out on the playoffs, the Diamondbacks put up some remarkable numbers in 2018 — both good and bad.

Here are some stats to highlight Arizona’s season as they prepare for the final series of the year.

All stats were up-to-date entering Thursday.

Often due to either poor hitting or a struggling bullpen, the D-backs were 19-29 in one-run games — good for a .396 record. This was a huge difference from their 2017 mark, 29-23, a .558 mark.

Eduardo Escobar is ranked second in MLB in doubles with 47. He is tied with Jose Altuve in 2014 for fourth-most by a Venezuelan player in MLB history. His .983 fielding percentage is best in MLB among all third baseman. Escobar has been a huge addition to this team since being acquired on July 27 after losing Jake Lamb for the season.

Only three pitchers had a better WAR than Patrick Corbin’s mark of 6.1 in 2018: Jacob deGrom, a Cy Young contender with a 1.70 ERA; Max Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young winner; and Justin Verlander, who won the 2011 Cy Young and American League MVP. Corbin’s All-Star nod this year was his first since before he had Tommy John surgery.

Four of Arizona’s relief pitchers are ranked in the top 5 for most appearances in MLB this season. Brad Ziegler (1), Andrew Chafin (T2), Archie Bradley (T4), and Yoshi Hirano (T4) are all in the top five for appearances, which could explain the loss of steam at the end of the season.

David Peralta became the sixth outfielder in D-backs history to hit 30+ home runs in a season, joining Luis Gonzalez, Steve Finley, Reggie Sanders, Justin Upton, and Chris Young.

Perhaps in part because of taxation from the sheer amount of appearances, the Diamondbacks bullpen had an ERA of 6.02 in September, second-worst to only the Florida Marlins and nearly a whole run behind the third-worst team, the Pittsburgh Pirates (5.07 ERA). The bullpen had seven losses during the month.

The D-backs were near the bottom-third of the league in runs scored entering the final series with 683. Entering Thursday, that was one below the Cincinnati Reds (last place NL Central). Every team in the playoff hunt was in the top 12, with the Brewers at the end of that group with 728 runs scored.

With Paul Goldschmidt and David Peralta reaching 30+ homers each, this is the first time the D-backs have had multiple players with 30+ home runs in consecutive seasons since 1999-2000. Goldschmidt and Jake Lamb both had 30+ last season.

Goldschmidt reached base safely in 48 consecutive road games, a franchise record. Despite his ups and downs this season, Goldy is hitting .331 with 27 doubles, 28 home runs, 70 RBI, and 61 walks since May 23.

After leading the NL West for 125 days this season and being in first place at the start of every single month, the D-backs will finish the season in third place in the division.

The team has had a record of .500 or better for 321 consecutive games dating back to Opening Day 2017. This is the second-longest streak in D-backs history behind a 333-game streak in 1999-2001.
