For the second time this season, the Phoenix Suns have assigned guard De’Anthony Melton to the NAZ Suns, Phoenix’s G League affiliate.

Melton was sent to the G League on Saturday by the organization and played 44 minutes in NAZ’s season opener. Melton shot 6-for-18 from the field, finishing with 16 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals.

The day after that game on Sunday, Melton was recalled to the Suns and was with the team for its win over the Memphis Grizzlies.

When the Suns were fully healthy in Friday night’s loss to the Toronto Raptors, Melton was inactive along with Troy Daniels and George King, who is already in Prescott Valley.

With fellow rookie Elie Okobo looking to have won the backup point guard position behind starter Isaiah Canaan, there aren’t minutes left for Melton. There’s also veteran guard Jamal Crawford, who has sparingly seen minutes as the fifth guard on the roster.

“I think it’s great,” Kokoskov said Melton going to the G League on Saturday. “Great opportunity for a young guy to play all [these] minutes. It’s hard to get better, to grow if you just practice.”

Melton has appeared in two games this season for a total of 23 minutes.
