Arizona Coyotes invite young cancer survivor on team road trip

Nov 13, 2018, 10:01 AM

Tuesday night’s Red Wings game at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit will be the team’s Hockey Fights Cancer night.

It will also be the final game of a four-game road trip for the Arizona Coyotes, who invited a young cancer survivor to join the team for that final leg of the trip.

A young man named Will Pogue was brought into a team meeting room with head coach Rick Tocchet. As the team sat in the room a day before their home opener against the Ducks, Tocchet announced that Pogue would join the group on the team plane and at the game against the Wings.

“Hey we’ve got a surprise for you, you’re coming on a road trip with us. November in Detroit,” Tocchet announces as the team applauds. “And you’re coming on the plane, too, with us.”

Hockey Fights Cancer was founded in 1998 and is an initiative to “unity the hockey community in support of cancer patients and their families,” as it’s described on the league website.

November is the league’s Hockey Fights Cancer month, and all 31 teams will have their own Hockey Fights Cancer Night. The Coyotes’ Hockey Fights Cancer Night is on Sunday, Nov. 25 against the Calgary Flames.
