Arizona will be home to one of the first teams in a new soccer league.
The National Premier Soccer League announced Thursday that FC Arizona would be one of 11 founding teams of a league in association with the NPSL that is scheduled to play its first game in August 2019.
“Fans will be able to enjoy watching authentic clubs compete with professional players and staff,” said NPSL charman Joe Barone in a statement. “This new venture will build upon the success and experience of NPSL and its nationwide network of local soccer club members.”
The league will have a Founders Cup tournament from August to November 2019 and then a full season in 2020 lasting from spring to fall.
In addition to Arizona, the league includes three California teams, one in Chattanooga, Tenn., one in Detroit, two in Miami, a team in Milwaukee, one in Brooklyn and another in Oakland.
The press release said plans for additional clubs are being developed.
United States Adult Soccer Association president John Motta said this league will help train all one-field participants.
“This is another opportunity to develop players, coaches, administrators, and referees at the highest level of adult soccer,” Motta said in a statement.
“This is absolutely critical for player development, as it prepares players onto the next level and also for referee development, as this level of adult soccer is the best training ground for referees in this country.”
