One of the more odd press conferences questions turned into a ringing endorsement for Arizona State head football coach Herm Edwards’ hypothetical fighting ability.

A reporter earlier this week asked Washington State football coach Mike Leach who would be the last Pac-12 coach standings in an all-out brawl.

Leach said he would survive initially, but quickly dismissed himself as to not show any bias.

He then mentioned two coaches — Edwards and Utah’s Kyle Whittingham — as frontrunners to take the crown.

The reasoning behind the choices?

“If you’re in shape, you’ve got a chance,” Leach said. “They’re both in great shape, they both exercise. They’ve both got successful backgrounds as far as conditioning and all that.

“They’re both defensive guys and their players play tough and physical. So yeah, I think I’d have to go with either Kyle or Herm.”

Edwards, of course, played 10 seasons in the NFL.

It’s possible Edwards’ Sun Devils and Leach’s Cougars could fight it out for the Pac-12 title in a few weeks.

ASU wins the South if it wins its final two regular season games while Washington State leads the North and can clinch it this week.
