Report: Suns interested in G League point guard Darius Morris

Dec 4, 2018, 7:42 AM | Updated: 11:26 am

Darius Morris of the Santa Cruz Warriors will visit the Suns this week as Phoenix mulls its options while looking to add another point guard, reports ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Suns, who waived veteran point guard Isaiah Canaan on Nov. 28, have 13 players plus two-way rookie George King currently on their roster. They could add up to two more players to reach a maximum of 15 players (two-way contracts do not count toward that total).

Wojnarowski reports the team’s search for a “short-term point guard solution” has involved discussions about trades, unsigned free agents and G League options.

Morris has 132 games of NBA experience under his belt after being drafted 41st overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2011.

The 27-year-old who starred in college at Michigan has averaged 3.3 points, 1.4 assists and 38 percent shooting in 11.1 minutes per game over his NBA career that spans five teams.

In 11 games with the Golden State Warriors’ G League affiliate this season, he is averaging 19.5 points and 6.7 assists per game. He’s shooting 41 percent overall and 36 percent from three-point range on 5.6 attempts from deep this year.

While his scoring chops may be less-than-efficient at the NBA level, Morris’ passing abilities and ball handling could be attractive for a Phoenix team in dire need of help, especially if Devin Booker is out an extended period of time after re-injuring a hamstring strain against the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday.

Booker has been ruled out for at least the Suns’ game on Tuesday against the Sacramento Kings.

Phoenix will also continue leaning more on veteran combo guard Jamal Crawford and rookie point guards Elie Okobo and De’Anthony Melton.
