Patrick Mahomes: Potential NFL MVP and almost Arizona Diamondback?

Even in the Valley, we’ve all have heard of Patrick Mahomes by now.

And like most other athletes, the Kansas City quarterback — who is taking the NFL by storm — also had other loves while growing up.

One of which almost had him donning the Sedona Red.

According to Kansas City Star’s Mac Engel, Mahomes was almost a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2014.

Almost.

Mahomes, who played as both a pitcher and outfielder for Whitehouse High School in Texas, had scouts eyeing him throughout his high school career for his stellar play.

Apparently his performance caught the eye of former Arizona GM Kevin Towers and the D-backs who were looking to sign Mahomes to a deal during the 2014 MLB Draft.

The only problem? The team reportedly needed a “yes” from the future NFLer.

The D-backs never got it as Mahomes decided to take his talents from the diamond to the gridiron.

While it’s not known what pick the team might have used to take Mahomes, Arizona added Touki Toussaint and Cody Reed through the draft, among others.

Luckily for Mahomes, the NFL gamble paid off as the first-year Chiefs starter is easily one of the front runners for the NFL MVP award.

This season, the QB has completed 383 of his 580 passes (66 percent) for 5,097 yards, 50 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He’s also rushed for 272 yards and two scores on 60 carries.
