Former ASU quarterback Mike Bercovici takes a big hit in AAF debut

Feb 10, 2019, 12:10 PM | Updated: 7:48 pm

It was his birthday, perhaps not quite as happy as former Arizona State quarterback Mike Bercovici would have liked.

Making his debut for the San Diego Fleet of the Alliance of American Football, Bercovici took a hit from Shaan Washington of the San Antonio Commanders that sent the quarterback, the ball and his helmet flying in three different directions.

The hit contributed to Bercovici getting benched late in the game for backup quarterback Phillip Nelson.

Fleet head coach Mike Martz announced after the game that Nelson would start next week as the Fleet take on the Atlanta Legends.

Bercovici handled the defeat with gratitude on Twitter thanking fans for the happy birthday wishes and seemed determined to redeem himself.

He turned 26 on Saturday.

The Fleet lost the game by a final score of 15-6.
