Waiting for their name to be called in the final region during the Selection Sunday NCAA Tournament bracket reveal was worth it in the end for Arizona State.
The Sun Devils were selected as one of the Last Four in and will face St. John’s Wednesday night in Dayton, Ohio.
Both teams were selected as No. 11 seeds in the West Region after nervously sitting on the bubble for the majority of the selection show.
St. John’s and ASU have history after playing against each other last season at the Staples Center during the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic.
The Sun Devils won the game 82-70 as part of their historic 12-0 run through the nonconference schedule to start last season.
Romello White, De’Quon Lake, Vitaliy Shibel and Remy Martin were the only four holdovers from that match up to see playing time against the Red Storm. White led all scorers in the game with 22 points and nine rebounds.
St. John’s also had four players return this season from that game, including guard Shamorie Ponds who leads St. John’s averaging 19.5 points per game this season. He scored 19 in the match up in Los Angeles a year ago.
The winner of the First Four game will move on to face No. 6 seed Buffalo in the second round. ASU coach Bobby Hurley’s first head coaching position was at Buffalo from 2013-15.
