D-backs’ MiLB teams, others reveal 2019 Copa de la Diversión identities

Minor league affiliates of the Arizona Diamondbacks were among the 72 teams that revealed their Copa de la Diversión identities on Monday.

Naturally, that means wild new color schemes, uniforms and logos to go with them.

Translating to the “Fun Cup,” the Copa de la Diversión includes renaming of teams across MiLB in a season-long series of games. The goal: to embrace and honor the teams’ local Hispanic and Latino communities.

Take the Hillsboro Hops as an example. The Single-A club will change its name to the Soñadores de Hillsboro (the Hillsboro Dreamers) for four special nights featuring music, dancing and food.

It’s the second year the Hops participated in the Copa de la Diversión. Last year, they were the Lúpulos de Hillsboro, taking the name of the common hop (its scientific name is Humulus lupulus).

Triple-A Reno stuck with a card reference.

The Los Corazones de Reno features a milagro (“miracle”) heart in the logo, symbolizing love.

By taking the field as Los Corazones de Reno, the club is pairing its love for the community with the passion of baseball within Latino culture. The chili peppers represent this connection, as well as the one between food, family, & and baseball.

The Single-A Kane County Cougars took a different approach this year.

They were one of the few teams who kept their name, opting to don a new color profile. Here is why:

The cougar’s geographical coverage mimics the cultures and regions Kane County represents, making it the perfect name and identity to represent the 30-plus percent Hispanic fan base living in Kane County today.

Across MiLB, the diversity of identities the teams adopted for the special games this year ranged as wide as their cultural references.

Mascots covered the bases from food, to mythical creatures, to flip-flops, to llamas and more.
