ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

It’s just natural for D-backs’ Collmenter

May 17, 2011, 5:00 AM | Updated: 6:10 pm

Say what you want about Josh Collmenter’s throwing style because to him it’s just the way it is.

“I’ve always thrown like that,” he said.

Some guys learn to throw a ball from their dad or spend thousands on expensive training equipment in the hope of being the next major league sensation. Collmenter learned in an unorthodox way that yielded his unorthodox style.

“When I was younger one of my buddies had a tomahawk we would throw at a stump so we would go mess around with that,” Collmenter said in a Monday interview with Sports 620 KTAR’s Gambo and Ash. “That’s the closest I can come up with anything to describe exactly why I throw the way I do.”

The kid may have a “different” over-arm delivery, but if he continues to pitch like he did against the Dodgers, he has a future in baseball. On his first major league start, he gave up only two hits and no runs while striking out three. Some may call it beginner’s luck, but the Homer, Mich. native said a few appearances from the bullpen made him realize that he can have success against the big league hitters.
