ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

Gibson likes versatility, options at first base

PHOENIX – First base was one of the biggest question marks for the Arizona Diamondbacks heading into Spring Training this season.

The team hasn’t gotten anything eye-popping out of the position thus far, but a multitude of players are providing adequate results and options for manager Kirk Gibson.

“It sets up pretty nice for us. We have some flexibility,” said Gibson on the Sports 620 KTAR’s Gambo and Ash show on Wednesday.

The D-backs have been using a platoon of Juan Miranda and Xavier Nady for the majority of the time.

Both have provided consistent results for the Diamondbacks.

Miranda, in his first real opportunity in the Major Leagues, is hitting a respectable .272 with three home runs.

“He did have some really productive games. You see his power out through the middle of the field,” said Gibson.

Nady, who has never really played first base on a consistent basis, is hitting .267 while only committing one error.

“He has some instincts over there. He actually likes first base,” said Gibson.
