D-backs dream scenario in the draft

Jun 6, 2011, 4:10 PM | Updated: 5:42 pm

While the Major League Baseball draft doesn’t have the pomp and circumstance of the NFL and NBA drafts, that doesn’t mean it isn’t just as important to the building of a franchise.

With the Arizona Diamondbacks holding the third and seventh selections in Monday’s first round, their future and farm system could dramatically change in a matter of hours.

ESPN MLB analyst Keith Law knows exactly who the D-backs are hoping to land at both spots.

“They’re definitely getting [Trevor] Bauer at three. If that’s who they want, they’re going to get him. There is also a chance that they’ll also get [Danny] Hultzen, the left hander from Virginia, at seven. Which would be a dream scenario.”

Law thinks the D-backs are willing to overspend at No. 3 if it means they get the guy they want but may be more cautious with the No. 7 pick.

If they do in fact select UCLA’s Bauer with their first pick, Law thinks it will be a great value pick. He feels that the young right hander is the “best performing pitcher in college baseball and a workhorse.”

Law also likes Hultzen due to his durability and the fact that he proved himself for three years in the tough ACC. He doesn’t have the upside of Bauer and projects as probably a No. 2 or No. 3 starter in the bigs, but the He thinks he’s a very safe pick.

Whether Law is right on who the D-backs will select or not, the picks will go a long way to helping build the franchise for the future.
