Kerry Wood unlikely to waive no trade clause

Although Kerry Wood and his right arm might sound like a perfect fit for the Arizona Diamondbacks bullpen, he might not feel like the organization is the right fit for him. As a matter of fact, he might not think any organization, outside of the Chicago Cubs, is an option.

Wood, who signed with the Cubs this past offseason for well below market value, has a full non-trade clause and, according to ESPN’s Jayson Stark, he may not be willing to waive it to join any team for the stretch run.

Meanwhile, a friend of Kerry Wood tells Rumblings no one should count on Wood waiving his no-trade clause to leave the Cubs and go to a contender at the trading deadline. Wood took a way-below-market $1.5 million deal to return to Chicago for family reasons. And if one of those reasons was that he was looking forward to walking his son to school in September, why would he agree to a trade that pulled him away from home for September and possibly October?

It’s tough to fault a guy for wanting to be around his family. Especially when that guy has overcome as many injuries and career setbacks as Wood. With that said, his arm would look quite nice at the back end of the D-backs ‘pen. Especially if they continue to struggle with keeping leads in the seventh innings.
