Collmenter enjoying ride, success with D-backs

PHOENIX – Josh Collmenter has had quiet an interesting baptism into Major League baseball.
Since being recalled, the D-backs rookie has been outstanding compiling a 1.12 ERA and becoming an early candidate for Rookie of the Year along the way.
Collmenter debuted out of the bullpen, but has since been moved to the starting rotation where he has blossomed.
Collmenter prefers being a starter over a reliever because of the importance that comes with the role.
“As a starter, you feel like you’re right in the mix. I wanted to be able to make an impact. I’m able to go out each time and put it all out on the line and give my team a chance to win.”
“Either you do well and win or you don’t do well and lose,” said Collmenter on the Sports 620 KTAR’s Gambo and Ash show on Friday.
Much has been made of Collmenter’s unique over the top delivery, prompting many to question whether he can sustain success once hitters get used to his delivery.
Collmenter is used to having critics question his ability to keep hitters from figuring him out.
“Switching up your sequences and how you use your pitches is something I’ve done my entire career, so it was easier for me to do at this level. That’s what it is, staying one step ahead of the hitters,” said Collmenter.
The D-backs rookie credits his teammates for helping him feel comfortable.
“We have a great group of guys. The veterans really set the tone and are good leaders. It’s a great clubhouse to be around,” said Collmenter.
Arizona’s starting pitching in general as been a key to the team’s early success. Collmenter says the rotation is pushing each other to succeed.
“Probably in each guy’s mindset, you want to go out there and take the baton like a relay race. One guy goes out and does this and then he hands it to the next guy and he wants to pull his weight,” said Collmenter.
If Collmenter and rest of the D-backs starting rotation continues to excel, he might get to experience his first taste of postseason baseball in his rookie season.
