Diamondbacks enter huge series with Giants

A June series against the top team in the division, especially when you’re only a half-game behind, carries a little more importance than any other throughout the month.

A June series with a first place team that happens to be decimated by injuries at the moment presents a golden opportunity to pick up some ground.

A June series against an injured first place team at home?

“It’s as big as a June series can get,” Doug Franz said on Sports 620 KTAR’s Doug and Wolf show Tuesday.

Yep, that just about sums it up.

The Diamondbacks enter the three-game set with a 37-30 record after taking three of four in Florida from the Marlins. They’re playing pretty good baseball, but the Giants have proven they can handle Arizona, taking five of six from the D-backs already this season. That may be why Sports 620 KTAR’s Ron Wolfley said this series could go a long way toward determining just how far the boys in Sedona Red can go this summer.

“This is a tone setter; this is a tone setter in the season. The baseball season is so long, you need these still point moments in the season that actually separate the season and divide the season up for players, and I think right now this is a still point moment for the Arizona Diamondbacks and their surprising, pleasantly surprising, 2011 season,” he said.

And, if nothing else, this may be the D-backs last good chance to maybe win a few games they otherwise wouldn’t. As Franz pointed out, the Giants should only get healthier from here.

“The Giants are going to get better during the season so you have to be able to beat them up as much as you can when they are down,” he said. “So you have the opportunity, at home, to take on an injured first place team.”

Now let’s see what the Diamondbacks do with it.
