ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

If D-backs are to contend they’ll need to add a bat

It is pretty apparent, at this point in the season, that the Arizona Diamondbacks are a pretty good baseball team.

Just a half-game behind the San Francisco Giants, the D-backs can conceivably win the NL West — if they make some additions.

“It’s becoming more and more apparent that the Diamondbacks, they need a bat, they need a bat in the middle of the order,” Ron Wolfley said on Sports 620 KTAR’s Doug and Wolf show. “They need somebody that can really protect Justin Upton in the middle of that order, and Stephen Drew for that matter.”

The Diamondbacks, currently ranking third in the NL in runs scored, may not seem like they need offensive help, but their stats somewhat belie their true ability.

With just one regular hitting over .300 (Upton), and just three players with double-digit home runs (Upton, Chris Young and Ryan Roberts), the Diamondbacks really are lacking the type of bats opposing pitchers fear and managers try to work around.

Now, whether or not that kind of player is available, regardless of price, is yet to be seen. But adding a bat, especially if it is in the form of someone who can play first base, third base or left field, would not be a bad idea for a team that may fancy itself a contender.
