Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton was named to the 2011 All-Star game roster on Sunday, according to a press release from the D-backs.
“It’s awesome having a chance to play in the All-Star Game at Chase Field in front of the D-backs fans,” Upton said in the release. “It’s going to be a great opportunity. It’s extra special with the game being in Phoenix”.
Upton is one of only six active players since 1998 to appear in two All-Star games at age 23 or younger. In addition to this year’s game, he also played in the 2009 All-Star game, the release said.
Upton is batting .297 this season and is tied for sixth in the National League for extra base hits at 37.
Since May 29, Upton has been white-hot. He’s hit for a .388 average – second best in all of major league baseball – and is tied for third with a .468 on-base percentage.
Upton was also named NL Player of the Week for the week of June 13-19.
This season’s All-Star game will be played July 12 at Chase Field.
“It’s definitely exciting, and I’m looking forward to it,” Upton said.
