Inside the Box: Collmenter’s effort wasted

After every Arizona Diamondbacks game we’ll examine the box score and provide you with instant analysis. So it’s time to go Inside the Box for July 6, 2011: Brewers 3, Diamondbacks 1

The Good:

Kelly Johnson led off the game with a home run, his 15th of the year. The homer looked like it could have been enough, because…

Rookie Josh Collmenter pitched 6 innings and allowed just three hits and one walk. He continued the theme of struggling pitchers finding their stride in this series, though the bullpen could not shut the Brewers down over the final three innings.

The Bad:

The D-backs didn’t score in innings two through nine.

Arizona mustered just four hits on the day, with Stephen Drew being one of the main culprits. He went 0 for 4 and struck out three times.

Still, it would have been enough if the bullpen didn’t have a rough game. After pitching so well in the first two games of the series, John Paterson and Sam Demel combined to give up three runs in the seventh inning.

The Funky:

Johnson’s lead-off home run was the first for the Diamondbacks since Ryan Roberts did so in Florida on June 11th.
