Inside the Box: Collmenter roughed up in D-backs loss

After every Arizona Diamondbacks game we’ll examine the box score and provide you with instant analysis. So it’s time to go Inside the Box for August 5, 2011: Dodgers 7, Diamondbacks 4

The Good:

Micah Owings was able to come in out of the bullpen and save manager Kirk Gibson from having to burn the entire relief core.

Owings relieved an ineffective Collmenter and went 4 & 2/3 innings only giving up two hits and zero runs.

He made his case that he should have been the starting pitcher to stay in the rotation.

Willie Bloomquist had three hits out of the lead-off spot.

The Bad:

Starter Josh Collmenter had a night to forget getting rocked for six runs and not making it out of the third inning.

Some were surprised that the young Collmenter stayed in the rotation when the D-backs acquired Jason Marquis at the trade deadline last week and he certainly didn’t do anything tonight to prove he should stay in the rotation going forward.

Offensively, the D-backs had a rally going in the seventh inning with the bases loaded and only one out with their best hitter Justin Upton at the plate.

Upton smoked a line drive that ended up caught and resulted in a double play squashing the Arizona rally.
