After every Arizona Diamondbacks game we’ll examine the
box score and
provide you with instant analysis. So it’s time to go
Inside the Box for
August 29, 2011: Diamondbacks 5, Rockies 1

The Good:

Daniel Hudson threw a shutout as he went on to win his 14th game of the season. In his seven innings, he struck out three, walked one and allowed just three hits.

Hudson also got some run support via a lead-off homer by Ryan Roberts and big sixth inning from Aaron Hill, Miguel Montero, Paul Goldschmidt, Josh McDonald, and Hudson, who all had a hit in the four-run inning.

The Bad:

Justin Upton took a a nasty pitch to the back in the sixth inning and he was slow to get up. We can’t blame him, since it was between the numbers, but the D-backs bullpen took a bit of revenge, hitting three Rockies batters in the ninth.

Speaking of the bullpen, they almost blew the five-run lead in the ninth. Bryan Shaw and Joe Paterson may have been looking to get revenge for Upton getting hit, but they ended up loaded the bases. When J.J. Putz came in, he hit catcher Chris Iannetta and walked in a run. That brought the tying run to the plate. Thankfully, Putz got the next two batters out. Revenge serves a purpose, but not at the expense of a game.

The Funky:

The D-backs starting pitching staff is rocking it, allowing just three runs in their 48 combined innings during the current seven-game win streak.
