Diamondbacks are in, Giants are done

August 31st, 2011 should be the date etched into the gravestone for the San Francisco Giants.

They are, after all, done, according to Arizona Sports 620’s Doug Franz.

“Historic collapses have happened, but now the math is working in our favor to the point where you should not be concerned about the Giants,” he said.

Franz noted that the Giants sweeping Arizona in their upcoming series could change things, but that is not something he sees occurring.

“You have to sweep, and I just don’t believe that you’re going to sweep a team that’s going to throw Ian Kennedy and Daniel Hudson and, what I guess, is a revamped and more mentally tough Joe Saunders,” he added.

Arizona Sports 620’s John Gambadoro took it one step further.

“They’re the freaking Titanic,” he said, “They’re going down so fast right now and there’s no help in sight.

“There is no help on the way.”

In that analogy, Carolos Beltran is like the Carpathia: of some help, sure, but not nearly enough.

Meant to bolster a struggling offense, Beltran has hit just .270 for the defending World Series champions, with one home run and four RBI. Not exactly what they were hoping to get, and certainly not enough to make up for an otherwise disgustingly bad offense.

How bad are the Giants? On the season they are hitting just .238 as a team, and have struggled through August at a .231 clip. They have scored the fewest runs in all of baseball, and have shown little sign of turning things around.
