Inside the Box: Diamondbacks go seven clear of Giants

After every Arizona Diamondbacks game we’ll examine the
box score and
provide you with instant analysis. So it’s time to go
Inside the Box for
September 4, 2011: Diamondbacks 4, Giants 1

The Good:

Daniel Hudson threw a great game and deserved his win on Sunday. In seven innings, he only gave up three hits and one run while striking out five and walking one. The sad thing is, Hudson had no run support and looked like he was going to get the loss, until the eighth inning.

It looked like the Giants had the D-backs’ hitters numbers, as they only had three hits going into the eighth. Then Ryan Roberts stepped up and blasted a solo homer to left field. As the inning went on, a triple from Bloomquist and a single from Hill put the D-backs up 4-1.

The Bad:

The D-backs were bad at the plate up until the eighth inning. They only had three hits and Justin Upton was ejected for arguing a strike call. We would say that’s a bad thing, but the way the umpires have been calling against him all season — think of how many times he’s been hit — Upton deserves a moment to lose his patience.

The Funky:

The D-backs now have a seven game lead in the NL West. If they play .500 ball for the last 22 games, the Giants would have to go 18-4 to challenge the D-backs. Basically, taking two of three from the Giants did in their hopes of winning the NL West.
