The Diamondbacks finally have their first baseman in Paul Goldschmidt

Paul Goldschmidt has played in 30 games for the Arizona Diamondbacks, hitting .247 with six home runs, 19 RBI, 16 runs scored and three stolen bases.

He’s played a pretty good first base, too.

“It has amazed me how good he’s been defensively. He’s had some key hits, but he makes every pick,” said general manager Kevin Towers on the Arizona Sports 620’s Doug and Wolf show on Tuesday.

Based on his production this season, there’s a good chance fans will be seeing a lot more of Goldschmidt in the future.

“I think the Diamondbacks might have their first baseman of the future,” Arizona Sports 620’s John Gambadoro said.

The more Goldschmidt plays the more he looks like a viable long-term answer for the team at the position, and that would be welcome news for a team that has gone through first baseman about as often as closers the last few years.

“It’d be kind of hard to find anybody better. He’s a great kid, very focused and somebody that hopefully will be here for a long time,” said Towers.

Especially because he has such a powerful bat.

“He’s going to hit 40 home runs one year,” Gambadoro said. “He might be a guy that hits 30 to 40 every year.

“He has some ridiculous power.”

Indeed he does, and while Goldschmidt has struck out 35 times in his brief Major League career, the D-backs lineup is now one that can handle a few swings and misses in exchange for good defense and the long ball.
