Good work ethic pushes Goldschmidt into lineup

Sep 8, 2011, 12:01 AM | Updated: 1:53 am

Rookie first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has lived up to the hype as a power hitter in his first 32 games in the Major Leagues.

The 23-year-old has hit six home runs and knocked in 23 runs since being called up August 1st.

The offense was expected and should come as no surprise.

It is the rookie’s defense and work ethic that have earned him a spot in the lineup every day.

“He works out everyday,” Manager Kirk Gibson told Arizona Sports 620’s Burns and Gambo. “He gets ready to play before he hits the field.”

Goldschmidt has committed zero errors in 31 games at first base, something the manager attributes to improved athleticism.

Gibson credits Goldschmidt for working hard in spring training and letting the coaching staff help him get better.

It is no coincidence that since Goldschmidt has been in the lineup every day the Diamondbacks have been the hottest team in baseball.

“He’s made the most of a great opportunity,” said Gibson, “and he certainly has lifted us.”
