Gibson: Our backs are against the wall

The Diamondbacks face a tough challenge after losing the first two games of the division series in Milwaukee, but coming home to Arizona gives them an advantage for once.

“We’re in our home field so it will be different for us,” said manager Kirk Gibson. “We’re going to be much more comfortable.”

The two teams meet Tuesday night at Chase Field to continue the best-of-five series. Josh Collmenter will start for the D-backs and Shaun Marcum is expected to get the nod for the Brewers.

For the team that led the league in come-from-behind victories this season, an 0-2 hole does not seem totally insurmountable.

Gibson reminded reporters this team won three or more games in a row 12 times this season, they won nine games in a row after losing six in a row, won seven in a row twice and six in a row once.

“And all those streaks came after bad, bad play,” said Gibson. “We’re aware that we have the ability to play better and execute better.”

When a team loses the first two games of a series, it can be easy to point fingers and get distracted from the game.

“We’ve prospered together; we’ve failed together and that’s the way it will remain,” said Gibson. “It’s not over yet.”

Perhaps this the type of series these Diamondbacks were destined for, a comeback team in a comeback situation. They know they are capable of pulling off surprises in tough situations.

“We have our backs up against the wall,” said Gibson. “We understand what we’re up against and we cherish the opportunity to be here.”
