Diamondbacks coming up big with two outs

PHOENIX — After struggling to score runs in Milwaukee in the first two games of the series, the Arizona Diamondbacks returned home and had an offensive explosion.

A two-out explosion at that.

The Diamondbacks scored 14 of their 18 runs at home with two outs.

In Game 3, the big inning was the fifth. Paul Goldschmidt’s grand slam and Ryan Roberts’ RBI single came with two outs.

They extended the lead from 3-1 to 8-1. Ballgame.

It was another two-out grand slam in Game 4 that led to a five-run inning, but this time it came in the first and off the bat of Roberts. A Chris Young solo home run finished off the inning and gave them a 5-1 cushion.

Two innings later manager Kirk Gibson called on rookie Colin Cowgill with — you guessed it — two outs and runners on second and third.

Cowgill came through with a bouncer through the left side of the infield.

The single would give the D-backs a 7-3 lead and they would go on to win 10-6.

It was night and day for the offense from Games 1 and 2 in Milwaukee to Games 3 and 4 in Phoenix.

They will need to have an answer in Game 5 against Yovani Gallardo.
