Stephen Drew making progress

Diamondbacks shortstop Stephen Drew returned to the field
for his third day of on-field workouts since undergoing
surgery for a broken ankle last July. Drew took ground
balls on Monday and Tuesday before taking Wednesday off
and returning to action today.
“The healing is coming along and you know pretty excited
about that because there was a time there when I would do
things like that I’d have to shut it down for three or
four days to let it kind of calm down and do it over,”
Drew explained. “With that said, I had one day off and
came back out today and actually had a little bit more
giddy up on it so overall pretty impressed with it.”
Drew’s rehabilitation and training plan throughout spring
will be to work out for a couple days and take a day off
and continue that cycle until he feels strong enough to
participate in team drills.
He knows it will take time and so does manager Kirk
Gibson.
“He’s far from being able to play in a game,” Gibson said.
“We have worried that he would be really hobbled at this
point but he’s worked very hard. He took last week off,
it’s the first week off since he had surgery. He’s in
great shape physically and his mind is in a good spot and
he’s very determined. We are encouraged by where he’s at
no question.”
