D-backs recall Martinez, select Zagurski from Reno

Apr 24, 2012, 9:57 PM | Updated: 11:11 pm

The Arizona Diamondbacks shuffled their roster Tuesday,
recalling right-handed pitcher Joe Martinez from Triple-A
Reno and selecting the contract of left-hander Mike
Zagurski.

To make room for Martinez and Zagurski, the club optioned
lefty reliever Joe Paterson to Reno and designated
Jonathan Albaladejo for assignment.

Martinez, 29, had pitched in three games at Reno, posting
an 0-1 record with a 4.42 ERA in 18.1 innings of work.
The former Boston College Eagle is a former 12th-round
pick of the San Francisco Giants. Martinez has pitched in
18 big league games with the Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates
over parts of two seasons.

“We considered Joe to actually come up and start the game
(Monday) night,” Arizona manager Kirk Gibson told Arizona
Sports 620’s Burns and Gambo Tuesday. “He was going to
come, but then we decided to go with Wade (Miley)
instead.”

Zagurski had an ERA of 2.00 in 9 innings out of the Reno
bullpen so far this season. Like Martinez, Zagurski has
limited major league experience — 37 appearances over
three years, all in a Philadelphia Phillies uniform.

Paterson, who was a key cog in the bullpen for the 2011 NL
West champions, had struggled mightily so far, yielding 11
earned runs in 2.2 innings for an astronomical ERA of
37.13.

After getting the call-up from Triple-A in the wake of
Daniel Hudson’s injury, Albaladejo pitched one inning of
relief during Monday’s 9-5 win over the Philadelphia
Phillies. The 29-year-old
right-hander had a 2.35 ERA in 8 relief appearances for
Reno this season.

The Diamondbacks now have ten days to
either place Albaladejo on waivers, trade or release him.
