D-backs’ Putz to auction off Justin Bieber autographed card

Jun 19, 2012, 8:19 PM | Updated: 9:33 pm

From the moment Diamondbacks closer J.J. Putz pulled a
Justin Bieber autographed card on June 13, its fate has
been a consistent topic of debate.

Would Putz save (haha, get it?) the card? How about give
it to his daughters? Or, perhaps, in what would be a less
likely, more dangerous incident, would a group of
“Beliebers” chase the pitcher down and simply take the
card?

The card’s fate has been determined, though it’s none of
the options above.

Putz announced he will auction the card, with proceeds
benefiting the charities of teammates Craig Breslow
(Strike 3 Foundation) and Brad Ziegler (Pastime for
Patriots).

“Given the way I obtained this card, I think the only
responsible course is to donate it to charity,” said Putz.
“I have the chance to raise money and awareness for two
important causes. Besides, convincing my twin girls I was
better off taking them to Justin Bieber’s Believe Tour
kickoff concert on Sept. 29 in Phoenix rather than keeping
the card, put me in the running for father of the year.”

Putz obtained the card after Ziegler, who toured the
Panini Card Factory in Dallas, TX, returned with two boxes
of Bieber trading cards.

Putz, Ziegler and Breslow began opening the packs, which
is when the rare card was discovered.

“It’s great that J.J.’s case of Bieber Fever has turned
out to be so beneficial for Pastime for Patriots,” joked
Ziegler. “All kidding aside, I’m very grateful that he has
decided to help share the proceeds with a cause that is
close to my heart and will help the families of our
soldiers serving overseas.”

The auction is live at www.dbacks.com/auctions and will run
through Jul 1 at 9 p.m. PT.
