Padres edge D-backs in battle of extra-base hits: By the Numbers

Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres batters wouldn’t settle for routine singles Friday night at Chase Field.

Both teams, the Padres especially, were hitting the ball to all parts of the yard in the second matchup of a four-game series.

San Diego teed off of struggling starter Jeremy Hellickson, who seemed to get into trouble in every frame he pitched before bowing out after 4.2 innings.

The D-backs trailed 5-2 after Andrew Chafin came in for Hellickson and kept the starter’s baserunners at bay. Arizona didn’t go down quietly, however, as A.J. Pollock hit a fifth-inning home run and then Paul Goldschmidt and David Peralta had back-to-back solo shots in the following frame.

The game wasn’t tied for too long, however, as former Diamondback Justin Upton scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh when Will Venable singled off of Enrique Burgos.

San Diego held on for a 6-5 win, tying up the series at one game apiece. Despite Hellickson’s lackluster performance, the right-hander didn’t take the loss; Burgos, instead, suffered his first major league defeat, while Padres starter James Shields earned the win (4-0), despite giving up all five D-backs runs in six innings of work.

The two teams will play twice more over the weekend to complete the four-game set.

One night after putting up a career-best performance — three doubles and four RBI — catcher Tuffy Gosewisch saw a three-game hitting streak come to an end by going 0-for-3 with three strikeouts. His batting average fell to .228. The 31-year-old catcher was one of four D-backs starters — along with Mark Trumbo (0-for-4, two strikeouts), Yasmany Tomas (0-for-3, one walk, one strikeout) and Aaron Hill (0-for-1, three walks, one run) — who failed to get a hit in the loss. Hellickson, however, got in on the offensive action, going 1-for-1 at the plate for his second hit of the season.

Relief pitcher Brad Ziegler had his second-longest outing of the year, going 1.2 inning and striking out one. The 35-year-old right-hander did get into a little bit of trouble, though, as he allowed two hits and one walk in that span, but Oliver Perez came in and got the final out of the top of the ninth inning, securing Ziegler’s 12th appearance with no runs allowed this season.

Arizona can’t seem to put together a long winning streak. The team got a monkey off its back Thursday by winning its third straight game for the first time this season, but the group wasn’t able to extend the streak against Shields and the Padres. The D-backs fell to 13-15 with the loss, while San Diego bumped its record to 16-15, second in the NL West.

Six of San Diego’s 13 hits went for extra bases, including two doubles, two triples and two home runs. In other words, as a team, the Padres hit for the cycle twice. Five of those extra-base hits came off Hellickson. Arizona only accumulated seven hits in return — but, of course, four of them left the yard.

Shortstop Chris Owings blasted the first of four Diamondbacks home runs in the game. The second-inning homer was Owings’ eighth of his career, including his second this season. His was the only one of the four to bring in more than one run, as Aaron Hill was on base to give Arizona a 2-1 lead at the time. The 23-year-old Owings finished the night 1-for-4, his batting average falling to .221.

Hellickson has given up 21 hits and 12 runs — all earned — in his last three starts, with 5.1 innings being his longest outing in that span. He also walked two in addition to surrendering eight hits to the Padres. The starting right-hander (1-3) was lucky to not take the loss Friday, as his team was in a three-run hole when he exited. The first-year Diamondback has allowed three earned runs or more in all but one of his six starts this season, and his ERA is now 5.85.

Padres third baseman Yangervis Solarte played in his 160th MLB game Friday, and he finally recorded the first stolen base of his career, as he swiped second off Chafin and Gosewisch with Upton already on third base in the fifth inning. The 27-year-old Solarte finished the night just 1-for-5, but is batting a respectable .294 on the season.
