Trumbo, D-backs deliver retribution to Nationals: By the Numbers

Right back at ya, Washington.

The Washington Nationals slaughtered Josh Collmenter and the Arizona Diamondbacks in Monday’s series opener at Chase Field, but the home team more than returned the favor Tuesday.

Uber-hyped pitcher Stephen Strasburg started on the hill for the Nationals, but he got pulled in the fourth inning after Mark Trumbo’s three-run homer capped a five-run outburst for the D-backs.

Arizona batters continued to rake against the following two Nationals pitchers, Sammy Solis and Matt Grace. The D-backs reached home in five of the game’s six innings, and they built a lead as big as 10.

Rubby De La Rosa started for Arizona and didn’t have a stellar night, but he certainly pitched well enough to keep the game from becoming a shootout.

Washington scored a pair of meaningless runs in the ninth inning off reliever Andrew Chafin, and Arizona finished with a 14-6 victory. The D-backs bumped their record to 15-17 with the win, while the Nationals fell to 18-16, suffering just their third loss in their last 14 games.

The two clubs will face each other once more in a matinee matchup Wednesday to determine the winner of the series.

Here’s a look at the D-backs’ big victory Tuesday night, by the numbers:

Paul Goldschmidt was the lone Diamondbacks batter to not record a hit in the win, although he did draw two walks and scored twice. The two-time All-Star went 0-for-3 with a strikeout on the evening, but is still batting .333. He’s actually hitless in his last three games, although he was taken out after one at-bat Monday.

De La Rosa got in on the hitting spirit, blooping an opposite-field RBI single in the fifth inning and finishing the night 1-for-3. He recorded his first hit of the season and the first RBI of his career in the win. His seasonal batting average is now .063.

Catcher Tuffy Gosewisch is becoming a bit more formidable at the plate, as he had an RBI single and a sacrifice fly for his second multi-RBI game of the season. The 31-year-old Arizona State product ended up 1-for-4 on the night with one run scored and one strikeout. He has hit safely in three straight games and is now batting .236.

In addition to his fourth-inning three-run blast, Trumbo added a solo shot in the sixth, giving him six homers on the year. The 29-year-old slugger now has three two-home run games since joining the D-backs in 2014. His four RBI were one shy of his best with the club. Trumbo finished the night 2-for-5, striking out once. His batting average is now at .292.

The Diamondbacks’ 4-6 hitters — David Peralta, Aaron Hill and Chris Owings — all went 3-for-5 in the win, accounting for nine of their team’s 16 hits. Owings had a double and his second triple of the year, while Hill was the only one of the three to record any RBI, as he hit a two-run double in the opening inning.

Shortstop Nick Ahmed, not normally known for his hitting, got in on the D-backs’ offensive barrage, going 2-for-3 with one RBI (his second of the year), one run scored and one walk, improving his batting average to .150. The performance marked his fifth two-hit game in the majors — and his third of the year.

De La Rosa went exactly seven innings for the third time in his last four starts. He gave up eight hits and four earned runs against the Nationals while walking two and striking out four. The right-hander’s ERA nudged up to 4.50 with the 90-pitch performance. One of the hits he allowed was a home run, his seventh surrendered this season.

Bryce Harper went deep for two runs in the sixth inning off De La Rosa. It was the Washington phenom’s National League-leading 12th homer, including his seventh in the last six games. The 22-year-old left-handed hitter finished the night 2-for-3 with two RBI, two runs scored and one walk. He’s batting .308 on the year.

The 14 runs scored by Arizona — which came in the first six innings — beat out the team’s previous season high of 13, which happened in a victory last Wednesday in Colorado, the first game of a doubleheader. Even if the D-backs had held for a 14-4 win, as was the score entering the ninth inning, it wouldn’t have been their largest margin of victory this season: They pounded San Diego last Thursday 11-0.

It took Ender Inciarte 47 games in his rookie season last year to record his first home run. Well, he got his first in the Diamondbacks’ 32nd game this time around, a solo shot to right in the third inning. It was Inciarte’s only hit of the night in three at-bats, but he was responsible for two sacrifice flies, giving him three RBI on the evening — one shy of his season high.

The D-backs again struggled to draw fans on a weekday, as only 19,053 came to Chase Field — a 39.2 percent occupancy rate. However, it was a better mark than the season low of 16,406 that attended Monday’s series opener.
