D-backs’ winning streak snapped, as Rizzo, Cubs feast on weary bullpen: By the Numbers

...

For a moment, it felt like we might be treated to a replay of Friday night’s thrilling 13-inning win for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Instead, the game more or less ended with Chicago’s Anthony Rizzo smashing a three-run home run off of D-backs reliever Enrique Burgos in the top of the ninth to ultimately give the Cubs the 9-6 victory at Chase Field.

Rizzo would finish the game driving in six RBI.

The D-backs received solid performances from their lineup and starting pitching, as David Peralta and Yasmany Tomas drove in five of the team’s six runs, while Rubby De La Rosa pitched six solid innings with eight strikeouts. However, it was the bullpen that was the bugaboo for the D-backs Saturday night.

Surrendering five runs (four earned) over the game’s final three innings, D-backs relievers provided no such relief. In fact, of the four relievers utilized by D-backs manager Chip Hale, three gave up earned runs. (Daniel Hudson ceded no runs in only 0.1 IP.)

Below we take a look at the D-backs’ defeat, by the numbers.

Tuffy Gosewisch’s solo home run in the sixth inning was his first of the season and his second as a major leaguer. In fact, Gosewisch’s two career home runs have both come against the Chicago Cubs. Also, for good measure, Tuffy flashed some impressive leather in the second inning.

Two D-backs hitters extended their hitting streaks to eight games Saturday, as shortstop Nick Ahmed (1-for-4) and third baseman Yasmany Tomas (1-for-4, two RBIs) each reached base safely via base hit versus the Cubs.

The combined ERA of the D-backs’ bullpen over the final three innings of the contest. After receiving solid pitching from starter Rubby De La Rosa, the Arizona relievers couldn’t close the deal Saturday. Right-hander Enrique Burgos was victimized, in particular. After securing back-to-back saves versus the Miami Marlins earlier in the week, Burgos surrendered two earned runs on two hits in the top of the ninth, receiving the loss.

3.10

Speaking of De La Rosa, the 26-year-old righty had another solid outing for the D-backs, going six innings ceding four earned runs, striking out eight. Over his last four starts, De La Rosa is 2-0 with a 3.10 ERA

200

The D-backs have scored 200 runs through the first 42 games of the season. Entering the day, Arizona ranked second in the National League (fourth in MLB) behind only the Washington Nationals.

Arizona’s five-game winning streak comes to a halt following Saturday’s 9-6 loss to Chicago. Additionally, the D-backs’ six-game winning streak over the Cubs also comes to and end.
