A closer look: D-backs lose series finale to Mets

Jul 30, 2012, 12:06 AM | Updated: 1:20 am

Sure, you could read the box score and know who won, but
we
all
know that won’t tell you everything that happened in a
baseball
game. So, we will give you a closer look, providing you
with
the
analysis, quotes and notes from the D-backs’ July 29
loss to the Mets.
Final
score: Mets 5, Diamondbacks
1
.

The D-backs hit the road for a tough 10-game road trip that starts in Los
Angeles on Monday. On Sunday, they lost to the New York Mets 5-1 to
wrap up the homestand with a 7-3 record.

The Good:

The Diamondbacks finished 7-3 on this 10-game homestand. Catcher
Miguel Montero reached base safely in 16 of his last 23 plate appearances,
going 9-for-15 with five walks and two hit by pitch.

The Bad:

The Diamondbacks record when scoring two runs or less is atrocious. They
are 1-36 on the season when lacking some offense. Also, starter Joe
Saunders’ streak of six straight quality starts came to an end on Sunday.

He Said It:

On Sunday, the D-backs acquired third baseman Chris Johnson from the
Houston Astros in exchange for two minor leaguers. The 27-year-old
Johnson hit .279 with 21 doubles, eight home runs and 41 RBIs in 92
games this season.

After the game, D-backs’ General Manager Kevin Towers talked about what
the club sees in Johnson.

“If you look at his numbers they’ve been pretty consisent numbers over the
years. He’s got power and I think this ballpark will help him. I think coming
to a contender will hopefully energize him, you know it’s been pretty tough
over there I’m sure over the last couple years.”

Noted:

Mets’ starter R.A. Dickey continues to dominate in every ballpark he enters.
He’s 12-1 with a 2.44 ERA in his last 19 games, which includes 18 starts.
Three walks are the most he’s issued in a single game since June 24th
against the Yankees.

Up Next:

The Diamondbacks continue a stretch of 20 consecutive games without a
day off when right-hander Trevor Cahill faces fellow righty Aaron Harang
and the Dodgers on Monday. Cahill is 0-2 with a 6.10 ERA in his past two
road starts.
