Diamondbacks designate Overbay for assignment

The Diamondbacks designated first baseman Lyle Overbay for
assignment Monday.

The move was made to clear room for the arrival of Chris
Johnson, who the team traded for Sunday.

“I understand it,” Overbay said. “They want to go young
and it’s part of the deal. Hopefully I’ve done everything
that they’ve asked of me.”

The Diamondbacks now have 10 days to either trade or
release the first baseman, and no matter what happens,
he’s hoping this isn’t the end of his career.

“If you look at it, last year I got designated the day
after the trade deadline and that’s about the worst time
you can, so maybe a couple days before the trade deadline
it might help out a little bit better,” he said.

Overbay, 35, hit .292 with nine doubles, two home runs and
10 RBI for the D-backs in 2012, but had struggled of late,
collecting just eight hits over the last two months.

Overbay is a veteran of 12 MLB seasons, and has a career
average of .271 with 133 home runs and 581 RBI as a member
of the D-backs, Brewers, Blue Jays and Pirates.
