Diamondbacks avoid fireworks at deadline

Despite rumors of a move for a front line starting pitcher that involved dealing Justin Upton, the Diamondbacks decided to avoid making a blockbuster deal at the July 31 mid-afternoon trade deadline.

“We liked the club the way it was, I didn’t want to tinker with it too much,” Diamondbaks GM Kevin Towers told Arizona Sports 620’s Doug and Wolf on Tuesday. “I think sometimes when you bring too many bodies to a club it can throw off chemistry.”

Though they didn’t land anyone like Matt Garza or Cliff Lee, the Diamondbacks did make several moves in the past week or so to fill voids. To start things off the team designated Ryan Roberts for assignment, dealing him to Tampa Bay for minor leaguer Tyler Bortnick.

To fill Roberts’ spot at third the Diamondbacks then dealt minor league outfielders Marc Krauss and Bobby Borchering to the Houston Astros, acquiring Chris Johnson in exchange.
