A closer look: Errors cost Diamondbacks in loss to Cardinals

we
all
know that won’t tell you everything that happened in a
baseball
game. So, we will give you a closer look, providing you
with
the
analysis, quotes and notes from the D-backs’ August 14
loss to the Cardinals.

score: Cardinals 8, Diamondbacks 2.

The good:

Miguel Montero continued his strong season with his 14th home run of the year in the seventh inning to cut the Cardinals lead to 3-2 at that point. Montero is tied with Aaron Hill for third on the Diamondbacks roster in home runs, behind Jason Kubel (25) and Paul Goldschmidt (16). Montero is also second on the team with 70 RBI, behind Kubel who has 77.

The bad:

Though Ian Kennedy seemed to pitch well Tuesday night, he had a rough seventh inning as he fell to 10-10 on the season.

Kennedy gave up a single to Skip Schumaker to lead off the inning. The next batter, Rafael Furcal laid down a bunt that Ian Kennedy threw poorly to first and was given an error. Shane Robinson came up next and grounded into a fielder’s choice but Ian Kennedy earned his second error in two plays and allowed Schumaker to score from third.

Kennedy then intentionally walked Jon Jay and was pulled with the bases loaded and no outs. Kennedy finished the night with 6 innings pitched and gave up six hits and five runs, three of which were earned.

Brad Ziegler managed to get the Diamondbacks out of the inning while only giving up one more run, but the damage was done as the Cardinals then led 5-2.

Noted:

Matt Carpenter doubled to center in the bottom of the eighth inning scoring two runs, but the play was originally called out by third base umpire Paul Emmel. Gerardo Parra made what looked to be a diving catch in center on the play, but it turns out he scooped the ball into his glove after it made a short bounce, which first base umpire Jerry Meals saw and immediately reversed the call.

He said it:

“We gave up two errors in two plays, that is what kills you in games like this,” manager Kirk Gibson said. “We had our opportunities but everything was in the ground. You have to be more selective and find ways to get hits.”

The Diamondbacks look to take game two against the Cardinals as Joe Saunders (6-8, 3.52 ERA) faces off against Adam Wainwright (10-10, 3.90 ERA) Wednesday at 5:15 p.m.
