Sure, you could read the box score and know who won, but we all know that won’t tell you everything that happened in a baseball game. So, we will give you a closer look, providing you with the analysis, quotes and notes from the D-backs’ September 7 loss to the Padres. Final score: Padres 6, Diamondbacks 5.

The Good:

The D-backs showed tremendous heart, rallying back from a 5-0 deficit to tie the game in the eighth inning.

Miguel Montero was instrumental in the team’s short-lived comeback. The D-backs catcher hit a game-tying two-run double.

The Bad:

Arizona could not contain Chase Headley. He hit two home runs, including a game-winning solo shot in the bottom of the eighth, and drove in four runs to sink the D-backs in the opener of this three-game series.

Rookie Tyler Skaggs struggled for the Diamondbacks in his fourth major league start. He lasted just three innings and allowed five runs on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

Noted:

The Padres have now won 13 of 17, including three straight games.

He Said It:

“Headley’s on fire,” D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said. “We know that. You just have to make good pitches. If you don’t make good pitches, he’s going to pound you like he did tonight.”

Up Next:

The D-backs and Padres will play game two of this three-game series Saturday night at Petco Park. Left-hander Wade Miley (14-9, 2.90) is set to face right-hander Casey Kelly (1-0, 3.86) for the Padres.
