De La Rosa powers D-backs past Giants: By the Numbers

Rubby De La Rosa gave the Diamondbacks a strong outing and nearly gave the bullpen a day off during Sunday’s 4-0 win over the San Francisco Giants.

De La Rosa pitched eight scoreless innings and was looking for the complete game before allowing the first two runners to get on base in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the Giants threatened for the first time all game.

De La Rosa (5-3) allowed a leadoff double to Joe Panik and a single to Brandon Belt before D-backs manager Chip Hale saw enough after 97 pitches. He ended the afternoon giving up eight hits with six strikeouts and allowed two walks.

Daniel Hudson came in and stuck out Brandon Crawford for the first out, then walked Casey McGehee before getting pinch-hitter Buster Posey to ground into a game ending double-play as Hudson earned his first career save.

The D-backs got on the board in the top of the second inning after Welington Castillo reached base on an error and allowed Jake Lamb to score. Arizona tacked on runs in the fifth inning following a double by Chris Owings and added one more in the sixth.

The win gives the Diamondbacks the sweep of the three-game series after getting swept earlier in the week by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Arizona’s defense bailed out De La Rosa and Huston five times Sunday as the Giants left six runners on base and were 2 for 7 with runners in scoring position.

Paul Goldschmidt had two hits to increase his National League leading batting average to .359. Goldschmidt ended the day going 2 for 3 with two walks. In the last seven days he has collected 10 hits in his last 20 at bats.

Lamb and Goldschmidt each had four of the Diamondbacks eight total hits. Owings, Castillo, Ender Inciarte, David Peralta had the other four.

The D-backs held the Giants to just two runs for the entire three game series after giving up 19 against the Dodgers.

The Diamondbacks are 6-1 against the Giants in San Francisco this year and are 7-3 against the defending World Series champions overall. With the win, the D-backs improve to 15-16 on the road and 30-32 overall.

It’s been seven years since the last time the D-backs swept the Giants in San Francisco, which occurred in July 2008.
