Spokane is one of the toughest places to play for any visiting team in the Arena Football League.

That includes the three-time defending league champions. The Arizona Rattlers found that out once again Friday night in a 52-45 loss as Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena.

Arizona (12-3) jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on Nick Davila touchdown passes to Kerry Reed and Rod Windsor.

The second quarter was a different story. Spokane (5-10) racked up 31 points in the period, highlighted by two touchdown passes and a scoring run by quarterback Arvell Nelson. The Shock also got a 35-yard field goal from Taylor Rowan as time expired and took a five-point lead into the locker room at the half.

Arizona drew first blood in the third quarter when Davila found Reed on a a 14-yard scoring strike. Fabrizio Scaccia’s extra point attempt was blocked, and the Rattlers led 32-31. It would be their last lead of the night.

On the evening, Nelson completed 22-of-34 passes for 259 yards and four touchdowns — three of which went to Anthony Amos. Nelson also ran for two scores in his first AFL start.

Davila put up gaudy numbers — completing 35-of-48 for for 355 yards and seven touchdowns, but threw two costly interceptions.

The Rattlers are now 1-3 in their last four games in Spokane. The lone victory came earlier this year, when they topped the Shock 59-47 on May 30.
