Angel Yin, Eun Jeong Seong reach US Girls’ Junior final

Jul 24, 2015, 6:18 PM

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Long-hitting Angel Yin and Eun Jeong Seong advanced to the 36-hole final in the U.S. Girls’ Junior, each winning two matches Friday at Tulsa Country Club.

The 16-year-old Yin, from Arcadia, California, won the last four holes to beat Andrea Lee of Hermosa Beach, California, 1 up in the morning quarterfinals, then made an 18-foot par putt on the 18th hole to hold off Mexico’s Evelyn Arguelles 1 up in the afternoon semifinals.

“I was really stressed out,” Yin said about the final hole against Arguelles. “I told myself, I just need to get a par. I would get it, but I didn’t make life easy at all. I was shivering all over my body. It felt good because making those putts, like clutch putts, it makes you feel good.”

The 15-year-old Seong, from South Korea, beat Canada’s Naomi Ko 4 and 3 in the quarterfinals, and routed Jayna Choi of Collierville, Tennessee, 6 and 4 in the semifinals.

“My iron shots are the best this week,” said Seong, second last year in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links. “Tomorrow, it will be very important to calm down.”

Yin is No. 8 in the world amateur ranking, and Seong is 41st.
