Beanie Wells: ‘I definitely need preseason’

Aug 13, 2012, 5:31 PM | Updated: 6:55 pm

Cardinals running back Beanie Wells was activated off the Physically Unable to Perform list last week, but was not yet ready for game action.

About to enter his fourth NFL season, the team’s leading rusher from one year ago said it felt great to simply be out on the field with his team for warmups.

“It was nice, especially after not doing anything since the last game of the season last year,” Wells said Monday.

Wells makes up one-half of what is expected to be a dynamic running back duo, with second-year pro Ryan Williams as the other.

However, they each make up 100-percent of the team’s “running backs on the mend” list, with neither seeing any game action up to this point.

That should change soon, as his practice schedule will be ramped up going forward.

“I think the plan is to progress as we go on, as the weeks go on and the days go on,” he said. “Just progress and do a little bit more each day.”

Which means Wells, who ran for a career-best 1,047 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, should get into a game shortly.

At least, that’s what he’s hoping for, since he said playing will help him get ready for the regular season.

“I definitely need preseason,” he said. “I don’t know how many. Maybe one game, maybe two games, but I definitely need it.”

Why, you may ask?

“If it be one play, I just need to go out there and take a hit,” he said.
