Grit Index: D-backs rally to beat Brewers

Jul 14, 2013, 6:48 AM | Updated: 6:49 am

The Arizona Diamondbacks rallied for three runs in the seventh inning to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 on Saturday night at Chase Field.

Didi Gregorius hit the game-tying single in the seventh and Eric Chavez walked with the bases loaded to give Arizona the lead for good.

With the win, the D-backs have notched 50 wins before the All-Star break for the fifth time in club history.

The Good:

D-backs starter Randall Delgado recorded his seventh quality start in eight outings. He allowed four runs, three earned, with five strikeouts and a walk in six innings of work.

Gregorius, Miguel Montero and Jason Kubel all hit solo home runs for the D-backs. The three home runs matched a season-high for Arizona.

The bullpen delivered a solid performance with Will Harris pitching a perfect seventh, Heath Bell handling the eighth and Brad Ziegler notching his third save with a 1-2-3 ninth. The save was Ziegler’s second in three games.

Harris (2-0) got the win for Arizona. In his last 16 appearances, he has tossed 15 scoreless innings. He has also posted a 0.74 ERA during that span.

The Bad:

The D-backs had no answer for Jonathan Lucroy. The Brewers’ catcher hit his career-high 13th home run of the season off Delgado in the sixth inning. He is now batting .529 in his last five games against Arizona.

First baseman Paul Goldschmidt saw his nine-game hitting streak come to an end.

Noted:

• The D-backs have now won three consecutive games and all six of their games against the Brewers this season. Five of those six wins against Milwaukee have been come from behind victories.

• Arizona extended their streak of games with at least one extra-base hit to a Major League-best 78. It is the second longest streak in franchise history.

• The D-backs hold a 2.5 games lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

He Said It:

“Just like I say, I tweet it everyday for everyone who ever doubted us,” Gregorius said. “We never back down and we always go out there and we fight hard, we never give up. They were up so we keep battling, keep battling, keep battling and we got a W.”

Up Next:

The D-backs and Brewers will play the final game of their four-game set and close out the first half of the MLB season on Sunday, July 14 at 1:10 p.m. Right-hander Ian Kennedy (3-5) will get the call for Arizona. He will be opposed by fellow righty Wily Peralta (6-9) for Milwaukee. The game can be heard on Arizona Sports 620.
