On Thursday, the Arizona Diamondbacks placed catcher Miguel Montero on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain.
The move is retroactive to July 29, making the 30-year-old eligible to return to the Diamondbacks on August 11.
In a corresponding move, the team selected the contract of Triple-A Reno catcher Tuffy Gosewich, who will backup Wil Nieves behind the plate.
In 92 games with the Diamondbacks this season, Montero was hitting .228 (74-for-325) with 11 doubles, nine home runs and 34 RBI. Only the St. Louis Cardinals’ Yadier Molina has caught more innings than Montero this year among major league catchers.
The Diamondbacks also announced the recall of pitcher Zeke Spruill, who will start Thursday against Yu Darvish and the Texas Rangers, with reliever Chaz Roe being sent back to the Reno Aces.
