Diamondbacks right-hander Trevor Cahill ends 2013 on high note

Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Trevor Cahill’s 2013 season officially came to an end Thursday, and it closed much better than it opened.

Cahill, who went 3-10 with a 4.66 ERA in his first 17 starts, came back a different pitcher after a month-and-a-half stay on the disabled list.

In his final nine starts of the season, the 25-year-old allowed 19 runs in 50 innings of work. In that span, Cahill also went a perfect 5-0 with a 2.70 ERA.

Following his final start of the season — two runs allowed in 5.2 innings of work against the San Diego Padres — Cahill finished the campaign 8-10 with a 3.99 ERA.

The five-year veteran has two years remaining on his five-year, $30.5 million contract. The D-backs have a team option in 2016-17.
