McCarthy, D-backs get best of former teammate Kennedy, Padres: By The Numbers

...

From 2010-13, no Arizona Diamondback saw more pitches from right-hander Ian Kennedy than his former battery mate Miguel Montero.

Saturday night, Montero put that muscle memory to good use, recording three hits off Kennedy, including his fifth round tripper of the season in the top of the second.

But Montero wasn’t alone.

The D-backs pounded the one-time, 21-game winner to the tune of 11 hits, and they received another stellar performance on the mound from Brandon McCarthy.

McCarthy was spotless over seven innings, as Arizona secured its second series win of the campaign with a 4-3 win over the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

Here’s a look back at the narrow, one-run victory by the numbers:

3:

Montero has recorded at least three hits in a game three times this season. Last night, it took the D-backs backstop until June 12 to have a three-hit game.

.375

Shortstop Chris Owings has settled in nicely at the plate, especially of late. In his last seven games, Owings has nine hits in 24 at-bats — good for a .375 batting average.

4:

Jedd Gyorko’s two-run shot off of Addison Reed in the bottom of the ninth marked the fourth long ball the D-backs closer has allowed this season. Only Angels closer Ernesto Frieri (5) has yielded more.

5:

Kennedy’s five-inning outing was tied for his shortest of the season. Back on April 3, Kennedy was saddled with a loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers after allowing three earned over five innings in a 3-2 defeat.

8:

Despite still sitting 11 games below .500, the D-backs actually have a winning record away from Chase Field. Saturday’s win bumped Arizona to an 8-7 mark in true road games.

11:

Kennedy hadn’t allowed double-digit hits as a member of the Padres until the D-backs tagged him for 11. In fact, his last such performance came in a 12-8 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on June 6, 2013. During that outing, he was sporting Sedona red.

17:

Recently-promoted outfielder Alfredo Marte had quite a 2014 debut Saturday. Marte laced an RBI double off of Kennedy in the second inning and then proceeded to double off Cameron Maybin in the bottom of the third with his first career outfield assist.

Marte also added his second RBI of the evening on an infield hit in the seventh.

23:

Dating back to Wednesday’s 5-4 win over the Colorado, D-backs pitchers threw 24 scoreless innings — the second-longest streak in franchise history. The record currently sits at 31 scoreless frames, which was set back in July 2002.

6/3-6/4/2011:

If not for the Padres’ three-run rally with one out in the ninth, the D-backs would have blanked consecutive opponents on consecutive nights — something they haven’t done since Joe Saunders and Josh Collmenter combined to achieve the feat against the Washington Nationals on June 3 and June 4, 2011.
