D-backs pound Kershaw, Dodgers in record-setting fashion: By The Numbers

...

Chase Anderson and Clayton Kershaw came within a game of potentially facing one another in the 2006 Texas State Playoffs.

That head-to-head matchup never materialized until Saturday night, so the Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander made sure to make the most of their meeting Saturday night.

In just the second start of his big league career, Anderson “out-pitched” the two-time Cy Young Award winner, although he received tons of support from his offense.

Arizona sent 12 batters to the plate in the second inning, chasing Kershaw before it’s conclusion with seven runs.

And backed by that seven-run frame, five home runs and Anderson’s sufficient performance (five earned runs in 5.1 innings), the D-backs recorded their first home win against the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2014 by a final of 18-7.

In the blowout win, Arizona set a franchise record with 18 runs scored. Previously, the club had scored 17 on four different occasions.

Here’s a look back at the historic rout by the numbers (one for each run scored):

1:

Chris Owings’ solo shot off of Jamey Wright in the fourth was the first of his career at Chase Field.

1.2:

Kershaw’s outing lasted just 1.2 innings — making it the second-shortest in his accomplished career.

Back in May 2010, he allowed seven runs in 1.1 innings against the Milwaukee Brewers.

3 Part I:

The D-backs’ seven-run output in the second was propelled by a trio of RBI triples from Cliff Pennington, A.J. Pollock and Owings. Heading into Saturday, the franchise had never recorded three triples in an inning.

3 Part II:

Through the first 13 games of May, D-backs third baseman Martin Prado had just three RBI. He matched that total Saturday with his first three-RBI game of the season.

5 and 6:

For the first time in his career, Paul Goldschmidt scored five runs in a game (club record), aided by his two-homer performance.

Goldschmidt also set a new career-high with six RBI.

7:

Arizona’s seven-run second was its largest inning since putting together a nine-run fifth on Aug. 18, 2012 against the Houston Astros.

That night, the D-backs went on to win 12-4.

7 and 5:

According to ESPN Stats and Info, Kershaw became just the third reigning Cy Youung Award winner to give up seven runs or more while recording five or fewer outs.

The others were Roger Clemens and Bret Saberhagen.

10:

Owings became the 10th rookie in team history to triple and homer in the same game.

Last season, shortstop Didi Gregorius did it in the second game of a May 27 doubleheader against Texas Rangers’ ace Yu Darvish.

With his double in the eighth, though, Owings became just the second rookie, joining Justin Upton (2007), to hit a double, triple and home run in the same game.

13:

In all, the D-backs racked up five doubles, three triples and five home runs — good for a franchise-record 13 extra-base hits.

14:

With their three second-inning triples Saturday, the D-backs moved into a tie for the league-lead (14) with the Los Angeles Angels.

16:

Los Angeles right fielder Yasiel Puig extended his hitting streak to a career-high 16 games in the third inning with a two-run shot off Anderson. Puig has nine home runs on the season with three coming against the D-backs.

21:

In addition to their franchise-high 18 runs and 13 extra-base hits, the D-backs also set a season-high with 21 hits.

35:

Left-handed reliever Joe Thatcher extended his scoreless streak against the Dodgers to 35 games with two-thirds of an inning in the seventh Saturday. After allowing the first two batters to reach, Thatcher was able to get Matt Kemp to fly out and Carl Crawford to strike out.

50:

Kershaw exited after just 1.2 innings of work. His 50 pitches were the fewest thrown in a game since he had only 39 in a contest against the San Diego Padres back on April 5, 2012.

52.50

The Dodgers’ 26-year-old lefty entered the evening with a 2.17 ERA against the D-backs, allowing just 27 earned runs in 18 starts. In the second inning alone, Kershaw yielded seven earn runs and left with a game ERA of 52.50.

1958:

With his long ball, Yasiel Puig became the first Dodger to have one RBI and one extra-base hit in eight straight games since 1958.

2000:

Anderson became the first D-backs rookie to win his first two starts since Geraldo Guzman compiled back-to-back victories on July 6 and July 17, 2000.

7/24/2012:

Before getting pounded at Chase Field, Kershaw hadn’t allowed at least seven runs in a game since the St. Louis Cardinals scored eight off him in an 8-2 win back on July 24, 2012.
