Arroyo’s reunion with Reds goes poorly, D-backs fall: By The Numbers

They say familiarity breeds contempt, and that certainly seemed to be the case Friday night between Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Bronson Arroyo and his former team, the Cincinnati Reds.

After throwing a scoreless opening frame, Arroyo, who called Cincinnati home for eight years, was greeted with three consecutive singles to begin the second inning.

One pitch later, Jay Bruce, Todd Frazier and Roger Bernadina strolled home without any opposition, as catcher Devin Mesoraco cleared the bases with a grand slam over the left field wall.

Arroyo would eventually settle down, retiring eight in a row at one point, but the 37-year-old found himself in trouble yet again after yielding a walk to Todd Frazier and an RBI double to Bernadina in top half of the sixth.

In all, the first-year D-back gave up five earned on nine hits over seven up-and-down innings of work.

And that run support was more than enough cushion for former Arizona State standout Mike Leake, who tossed six strong innings, as the Reds took the National League affair by a final of 6-4.

D-backs catcher Miguel Montero nabbed Bernadina on a stolen base attempt after his RBI double in the sixth. It marked just the third time in 28 chances this season that Montero successfully gunned out a runner.

4 Part I:

For the fourth time this season, Arroyo was charged with five or more earned runs. In 2013, he only gave up five or more earned runs six times.

4 Part II:

Since 1998, drafted ASU pitchers only have four career wins against the D-backs. Of those four, three belong to Leake.

13 Part I:

A.J. Pollock continued his torrid stretch at the plate with a 3-for-4 night at the plate. Pollock has 11 hits over the first five games of the homestand. With his two doubles Friday, the D-backs center fielder also set a new career high for extra-base hits in a month (13).

13 Part II:

Though not victorious on the mound, Arroyo took over the National League lead in double plays induced (13) following two twin killings Friday.

Arizona has turned 17 grounded-into-double-plays in its last 10 games.

Arizona had a chance to tie the game in the bottom half of the sixth, however was stranded at third after Ender Inciarte concluded the frame by being called out at first on a bang-bang play with Leake.

Kirk Gibson challenged the call, but the ruling on the field was upheld. In 2014, Gibson is just 2-for-8 (25 percent) on challenge attempts.

The D-backs scored in the first inning for the third consecutive game. Through 57 games, Arizona has scored 29 first-inning runs.

333:

Since being inserted into the Boston Red Sox rotation in May 2004, Arroyo has made 333 consecutive starts. Of the 333, only three, counting Friday’s outing, have come against the Reds.
