Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Cliff Pennington is likely to be out at least 10 weeks as he recovers from surgery on his left thumb.
Pennington suffered the injury — a sprained ligament — last week during a tag attempt of San Diego Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera. He was placed on the disabled list Tuesday, and Didi Gregorius was recalled from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move.
In 33 games played for the Diamondbacks this season, Pennington is hitting .243 with four doubles, a triple and six RBI.
